The History Bit

“Ben al Havis” is Arabic for “son of Havis” a Moorish Prince who reigned in MonteMayor castle in the 11th century. The castle had a very prominent and strategic location overlooking the coast, so desirably so for Catholic King Ferdinand, that in 1485 he took over.

Don Pedro Villandrado, Count of Ribadeo, was the first Christian mayor of Benahavis. First belonging to the municipal district of Marbella, it was granted the "Carta Puebla" by Philip the 2nd in 1572 when it achieved the status of an independent community.
